Early Life on Tyneside<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t

It was no surprise that in post-war U.K. I was led into a life in the military. The world seemed weary of itself in the 1940s and 1950s and nothing much seemed to happen. School went by without any significant interchange of ideas.

I looked forward to wandering about at lunchtime, staring over the wall of Swan Hunter\u2019s shipyard, trying to spot my grandfather and watching the ferries skittering across the waters of the Tyne to Hebburn. School was only somewhere convenient to be during the day, nothing more. It felt like a waste of time, and the local priest had more influence over teaching than the headmaster, so I left maths-poor and catechism-rich, ready to face a world not yet ready to face itself. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t

First Steps into the Adult World<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Drifting into the world of work via my father\u2019s butcher's shop, which I found unsatisfying, my first foray into the adult world was with the Sea Cadets\u2014my greatest happiness at the time.

HMS Northumbria was my first ship as a Sea Cadet. We went to sea in her, and as we sailed beyond the piers of the River Tyne, I looked back to see the yellow fug lying across the Tyne valley\u2014I had lived in this. It was the result of industrial Tyneside being powered by coal, and was always accompanied, day and night, by the rattle of riveting guns, the flash of welding torches, and the clash of steel colliding as the work of shipbuilding went on unabated. How my lungs survived that I\u2019ll never know.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Special Boat Service & Marines<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t

When I was old enough, my happiness increased again upon joining the Royal Marines Reserve. I was allocated to the Special Boat Service and became a diver\/canoeist\/parachutist. I was taught other skills too obscure to mention, and discovered the adult world through different eyes. A bigger collection of rogues and nutcases you would be hard pressed ever to find gathered in one place\u2014except on the set of some Hollywood \u2018B\u2019 movie.

In the Special Boat Service, we paddled canoes, made parachute jumps, and drained many a coastal hostelry dry. We dived with primitive oxygen equipment, invaded more waterside pubs, and blew things up. We crossed moor and mountain to blow more things up\u2014and drank loads of beer in remote and overwhelmed public houses. Four years of paid-for fun.

With the paltry wage of \u00a37 per week, bolstered by my part-time Marine\u2019s pay, I managed to buy my first motorbike: a Douglas Dragonfly\u2014smooth.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t

From Civilian Life to the Military<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t

I had been racing moto-cross bikes at the time and became hooked on machinery. I liked nuts and bolts and oily smells, so I thought my career should take a different path than being apprenticed to my father in a butcher\u2019s shop\u2014not a decision I\u2019ve ever regretted.

I succumbed to my inner petrol-head, left the Marines, and transferred to the Regular Army. I found employment as an army recovery mechanic with diving skills\u2014that was good, excellent in fact.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Royal Engineers \u2013 Germany Bridge Building Unit<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t

After training, I was sent to a bridge-building unit in Germany. During that period, I was often called upon to do extra-curricular work for the local German authorities, such as recovering bodies, searching for stolen items, repairing underwater pipes, and best of all, rescuing a five-hundred-tonne barge stuck on a sandbank in the River Weser.

This was in addition to handling the usual breakdowns and road crashes, as well as recovering items such as tanks that had fallen into the water during river crossings\u2014all good fun.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Civilian Life, Education, and Writing<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t

That began another twenty-six-year-long story of adventures. Eventually, the question of what to do next came up once more when I found myself on the cusp of civilian life. It was easier this time, and I entered the world of civilian logistics, first with BT and then the Post Office group.

Ten years after that came another retirement and time to study. I soon obtained an HNC in Business Studies and a BSc in Social Sciences. Thus suitably armed came another freedom, the joy of writing, and here we are. <\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n
